Quick Candle Holder Makeover

One day prior to Christmas, I was perusing Home Goods and saw a huge selection of GAWD AWFUL HIDEOUS candle holders. I had to have some!  They sat in my office for weeks while I figured out what to do with them.  These bad boys were a funky flashback to my 1970's childhood, had they been a color that even partially fit in with my decor, I might have kept them as is.  I love the shape, and they are sturdy, could totally be used as weaponry if necessary.

While I was allowing the glazed hippie chick holders to jack up the vibe in my office, I saw some cool black candle holders at Pottery Barn that were very similar in style.  To purchase three of those in varying like-sizes, I would have been out $107.00, plus tax.  Easy decision, I would do the same thing to my little lighting treasures that I do to 99% of the odds and ends that I come across in my life...... paint them black.  I need to start an entire blog category called "Paint It Black" because that's what I really love to do. Painting things black, it's a good thing.

Pottery Barn Version

This was the first time I had ever attempted painting over glaze. After the first coat of KILZ Primer, I was a little nervous that it wasn't going to work.  After a few hours, I sprayed on another layer of KILZ, which made me think seriously about using white paint instead.  The all white of the primer looked so nice!  I was worried about the glaze causing me grief, so I was overly cautious with my primer drying time.  After the second coat, I let the holders go a full forty-eight hours without touching them, which I rarely do with KILZ, that stuff is the bomb dot com.  Two coats of Krylon Spray Paint in Black Satin, and for the moment I am done.

People always comment that everything in my world is either black, white, or green.  True DAT! Although high school was many years ago, many years,  I am still very captivated by my school colors.  I think everyone has their 'signature colors' but maybe they just don't realize it......I've embraced mine.  Loves.

Back to these idiot stick candle holders.......I'm very pleased with my ten dollar investment, even more pleased that I refrained from once again subjecting myself to a Pottery Barn gouging.  Been there.  Done that.  And in all honesty, will likely do it again. I always like to live with a project for a minute if I'm not completely sure if it's totally 'done' or not.  I have a feeling I may rough these up with some sandpaper and glaze them with some dark chocolate to make them look a little less black, stay tuned.
